Collaborative
technologies such
as blogs, social
networks, video
sharing sites, RSS,
Wikis provide
innumerous 'meet
the consumer'
situations. The
challenge lies in
understanding the
social nature of
these
conversational
routes and
integrating
technology and
design to transform
consumers into
collaborators who
will ultimately
shape up the brand
experience.
I have always
evangelized the new
social media as a
democratic and
consumer controlled
ecosystem. As a
marketer I see the
immense potential
of social networks
and online
communities to
solicit feedback,
to test ideas,
concepts and
products. But if I
simple push out my
messages to my
target audience I
will hardly
generate any
response. I believe
transparency and
authenticity is the
key here. The social
media is also a
flourishing social
marketplace where
users upload,
download, use,
share zillions on
content everyday.
These transactions
can be monetized
too and folks are
earning. Take the
case of user
created videos for
instance.
Creativity has
taken a whole new
dimension in this
media where the
anonymous, amateur
user of yesterday
can now become a
virtual celebrity
and also a threat
to all the creative
heads in digital
media agencies like
us!
We have but only
one choice – cede
control. Let them
talk, engage,
contribute and
consume. We as
marketers should
facilitate the
dialogue,
participate in it
or even sponsor it.
Thanks to social
media, the consumer
today is informed,
opinionated and
also much
empowered.
The opportunities
are plenty. Only
connect.
